Lord Auckland
Barque, 628 tons new / 516 tons old, 480 tons reg. Built at Calcutta, India in 1836, for Messrs Brown and Co of London and commanded by Captain Jardine. This ship arrived in Nelson with immigrants from London on 26th of February 1842 and one of the passengers, J. Barnicoat, made several drawings of the ship during the voyage. The Lord Auckland also made 4 voyages to Hobart, Tasmania in 1844, 1846, 1849 and 1853 with convicts. On the voyage to Nelson the ship had on board 171 passengers, 42 crew, 18 sheep, 18 pigs, numerous geese, ducks and chickens for food and 95 tons of fresh water. Two deck plans exist, one giving immigrants allotted personal areas on the ship. Length 114ft x breadth 29ft 6in x depth 21ft 6in, with a square stern and sham quarter galleries, and with a man’s bust figurehead, her hull was coppered in 1838 and 1849.
